Ridley Scott admitted that he was not too impressed by Fortnite’s recent parody of 1984, the commercial that Scott originally directed for Apple.
Filmmaker Ridley Scott weighed in on the parody of his commercial “1984” that Fortnite recently released as part of their campaign against Apple. Scott directed the original commercial for Apple decades ago, and he was not particularly impressed by Fortnite’s take on the material.
“I sure have,” Scott told IGN when asked if he had seen the parody, adding that he wrote to Fortnite because he felt honored by the fact that they copied his commercial shot for shot. However, he also took issue with the messaging. “Pity the message is so ordinary when they could have been talking about democracy or more powerful things… And they didn’t use it,” said Scott.

The filmmaker added that the animation used in the commercial was terrific, as well as the idea, but he felt the message was ultimately “ehh.” The original commercial was a riff on George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, in which Apple was presented as the plucky upstart aiming to end the monopoly of big corporations over computer technology with its new personal computer, the Macintosh.
Fortnite‘s parody commercial turns the table and depicts Apple as the new dystopian overlord that the gaming company is battling against, ending with the declaration that, “Epic Games has defied the App Store Monopoly. In retaliation, Apple is blocking Fortnite from a billion devices. Join the fight to stop 2020 from becoming 1984.”
Fortnite was removed from the App Store after it introduced its own in-app payment system, bypassing the App Store’s 30 percent fee. In response, Fortnite‘s developer, Epic Games, is suing the tech company.
